The Red Sox will consider all options after receiving an update on Alex Bregman.
Manager Alex Cora revealed that Bregman’s quad injury was worse than anticipated and didn’t rule out a stint on the injured list. Boston can get creative replacing the All-Star, including calling up Marcelo Mayer. Those options weren’t shut down Saturday.
“There’s a lot of guys in the conversation,” Cora told reporters, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “Roster construction comes into play. Guys in the minor leagues, how they fit the roster and all that stuff.”
Nick Sogard played third base in the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park on Saturday. Cora said Rafael Devers moving back to third base wasn’t an option, and the Red Sox are more likely to mix and match players.
“There’s a few guys that have experience over there,” Cora said. “So we’ll mix and match. Obviously, if he goes on the IL, that comes into play and versatility. Roster construction comes into play. I’ve been saying this since spring training, the first day. So we’ll see where we’re at. I think now it’s more about mixing and matching if he goes on the IL for a while.”

Cora brought up Ceddanne Rafaela and Connor Wong as players who could fill in at third base. The Red Sox manager also didn’t rule out Kristian Campbell. Rafaela and Wong have a combined five games at third base in the majors; Rafaela played 80 games at third in the minors. And Campbell only played five games at third in his minor league career.
Boston will take time to figure out the next best steps for the team, but it will also focus on getting wins over its American League East rival Saturday.
