One of the Red Sox’s top prospects reportedly is on his way from Worcester, Mass., to Boston.
According to MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day, Marcelo Mayer was in the Worcester Red Sox clubhouse being congratulated by teammates. Multiple sources confirmed that Boston will call up Mayer for the second game of its doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.
“I sat (Marcelo) down and said, ‘listen, they called me and they don’t want you to play game two either. Hard for you to play game two here if they want you to play game two at Fenway,'” WooSox manager Chad Tracy told reporters, per NESN’s Natalie Noury. “He started clapping, big smile.”
The Red Sox likely will place Alex Bregman on the injured list after the third baseman told Alex Cora that his quad injury from Friday felt “worse” Saturday morning. Boston’s manager kept all options open for who would fill in at third, including Mayer.
Mayer, who is Boston’s consensus No. 2 prospect, led Triple-A Worcester with nine home runs along with 43 RBIs off a .818 OPS. He’s set to join fellow “big three” member Kristian Campebell in the big leagues, with Roman Anthony waiting for his opportunity.
