The Red Sox were not interested in bringing back an old friend to address one of the club’s bigger issues.
Boston still is in the process of finding its footing at first base following Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury. Romy González banged up his quad less than a week after the 25-year-old went down, and Rafael Devers will not be considered as a replacement option. At present, the Red Sox are platooning Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro at the position, and that duo certainly leaves a bit to be desired.
But even with mediocre depth at first, Boston didn’t want to reunite with a veteran whom it designated for assignment last September.
“Prior to designating Bobby Dalbec for assignment — and after the season-ending injury to Triston Casas — the White Sox checked in with the Red Sox to see if they had any interest in their former corner infielder. They did not,” MassLive’s Sean McAdam wrote in a column published Sunday. “Dalbec subsequently signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee.”
The Red Sox being completely done with the Dalbec experience shouldn’t come as a surprise. He only played a combined 58 big league games in his final two years in the organization and only logged seven appearances in Chicago, the second-worst team in all of baseball entering Sunday.

Boston did look outside the organization for first base help when it acquired Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels last Thursday, but the 29-year-old currently is rostered in Worcester.
